Riley's Layup Lift SC State Over UMES 71-69 In MEAC Opener

—JUCO transfer guard Brandon Riley hit a coast to coast layup with 5.9 seconds left in the game to lift South Carolina State to a 71-69 victory over Maryland Eastern Shore Saturday in Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference play.
      The Bulldogs snapped a five-game losing streak and improved to 5-9 overall and 1-1 in the MEAC.   Meanwhile, UMES dropped to 3-11 overall, and 0-2 in the league.
       SC State was led in scoring by senior guard/forward Darnell Porter with 14 Porter tossed in 14 points and six rebounds, while junior forward Presano Bell chipped in 13 and grabbed a team-high seven rebounds. Riley finished 10 points on the night.
      UMES jumped out to an eight point lead, 18-26 off a layup by Hillary Haley at the 6:13 mark in the first-half. Junior forward Joe Ikhinmwin nailed a pair of free-throws to cut the lead to six, 21-26 with 1:58 left in the half.
      A 3-pointer by UMES's Mark Robertson lift the Hawk's lead to eight, 21-29 with 1:00 left. Senior guard Carrio Bennett closed out the half with a pair of free-throws and UMES took a 23-29 lead into half-time.
       South Carolina State shot 1of 6 from 3-point range, while Maryland Eastern Shore was 5 of 14 and shot 40% from the arch. The Bulldogs managed to outrebound the Hawks 23-15.
      Maryland Eastern Shore's Tyler Hines opened up the second-half nailing a 3-pointer to put the Hawks up 10, 23-33 at the 19:39 mark in the game. A tip-in by junior forward Omar Sanders sparked a 9-0 run for the Bulldogs to pull within one, 32-33 with 14:58 left in the game.
        Porter's 3-pointer with 1:59 left in the game pull SC State with two, 63-65. The Bulldogs would then capture its first lead out the night off a free-throw by Presano Bell. A layup by UMES's Kevin White tied the game with just 0:08 seconds left in the contest. Junior guard Brandon Riley's coast to coast layup with 5.9 seconds left in the game sealed the 71-69 victory for the Bulldogs.
       Maryland Eastern Shore was led by Hillary Haley with 23 points and nine rebounds, Dishawn Bradshaw chipped 12 and Joseph Swift added 11 in the loss.
        South Carolina State will host Delaware State Monday in a tough Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference game. Tip-off is 7:30 p.m., followed by the women's at 5:30 p.m.
