SC State Falls to UNC-Asheville, 69-84, in Women’s Basketball

So., Fox scored 10 points in the contest
Asheville, N.C.—Whitney Wiley scored 15 points and Paris Alston pulled down six rebounds as SC State fell to UNC-Asheville, 69-84, in a non-conference women's basketball contest at the Justice Center on the campus of UNC-Asheville.

SC State (3-4) had complete control of the first half. After allowing UNC-Asheville to score the first three points of the contest, SC State went on a 7-0 run to take the 7-3 lead. The Lady Bulldogs maintained at least a six point advantage from the midway point of the half. SC State increased its lead by as many as 12 points late in the half, 36-24, before enjoying a nine-point lead, 40-31, heading into intermission. For the half, the Lady Bulldogs made 53 percent of their shots from the field and shot 63 percent from the charity stripe.

The second half however belonged to UNC-Asheville (UNC-A). UNC-A began the second half on a 20-9 run over the first nine minutes to go up on SC State 51-49 at the 11:53 mark. The Lady Bulldogs managed to pull within four points, 61-57, with just over seven minutes remaining but could not get any closer. SC State shot just 36 percent from the field and reached the free-throw line just five times making two in the half.

“It was the tale of two halves,” said third year head coach Doug Robertson. “The same shots that fell for us in the first half just didn't fall in the second.”

In addition to Wiley, sophomore Trinese Fox was the only other Lady Bulldog to score in double-figures with 10. Tracey Flowers and Tiara Knotts each scored nine while Tiana Hemphill contributed eight points in the loss.

UNC-A had four players to score in double-figures and two to record double-doubles. Kelli Riles scored 22 points and pulled in 16 rebounds while Lindsey Montgomery scored 11 points with 10 rebounds for the Bulldogs. Kendall Shepard scored 22 and Grace Blaylock scored 12 as the Bulldogs improve to 5-3 on the season.

SC State will return to action on Monday, Dec. 20 when they travel to Savannah, Ga. to take on Savannah State. The Lady Bulldogs will close out the 2010 calendar year on December 30 when they travel to Columbia, S. C. to take on the Gamecocks of the University of South Carolina.
