—Sophomore guard Khalif Toombs tossed in a team-high 13 points and added three steals, while senior guard Tyvon Williams had11 points, but it wasn't enough Fridy as Clemson outscored SC State 69-54 for the victory.
Clemson was led in scoring by Jerai Grant (Sr.6-8 F/C, Bowie, MD) and Milton Jennings (So. 6-9. F, Summerville, SC), who each chipped in 16 points in the victory. Jennings also added a game-high 10 rebounds.
“I thought we competed well against a good Clemson team tonight,” stated SC State head coach Tim Carter. “We missed some easy baskets that we should have made that hurt us down the stretch. Overall I am really proud of my guys.”
The first-half was pretty much back and forth with the Bulldogs pulling within one, 17-16, off a jumper by Toombs at the 7:16 mark. Tanner Smith's (Jr. 6-5, G, Alpharetta, GA) dunk with 4:01 left in the first-half gave Clemson its biggest lead of eight, 27-19. Toombs hit a layup with 1:44 left to pull the Bulldogs within three, 29-26. Senior guard Demontez Stitt (6-2, G, Matthews, and NC) nailed a 3-pointer as time expired to lift the Tigers to a 32-26 lead at halftime.
Clemson jumped out ahead early in the second half building a 16 point lead, 42-26, off a Jerai Grant layup at the 16:54 mark. Toombs layup with 7:33 left in the game cut the lead to 10, 51-41. Free-throws down the stretch worked to Clemson's advantage as Jennings hit a pair of free-throws to put the Tigers ahead 15, with 1:33 left in the contest.
Clemson shot 17 of 21 free-throws and out-rebound the Bulldogs 33 to 24 in earning the victory at Littlejohn Coliseum. The Tigers improve to 5-1on the season, while SC State falls to 2-3 overall.
Carter also stated, “They (Clemson) beat us physically in the post area.” When you miss easy shots you don't get a second chance basket against a team like Clemson.”
JUCO transfer Presano Bell had a career-high 10 points and three rebounds, while forward Omar Sanders added eight points and six rebounds in the loss for Carter's team.
SC State will return to action on Tuesday when they host the visiting Yellow Jackets of Allen University in a 7:30 p.m. tip-off.
