Princess Anne, MD – The SC State women's basketball team will open their Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) schedule Saturday when they travel to Princess Anne, Md. to face the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES). Tip-off for Saturday's contest is set for 2 p.m. in the W.P. Hytche Athletic Center on the campus of the UMES.
The SC State women (5-7, 0-0 MEAC) snapped a four-game losing streak in their last outing when they defeated Savannah State, 60-49. The win marks the second time this season the Lady Bulldogs have defeated the Lady Tigers (60-50 on 11-15-09).
Senior Sophilia Hipps finished the non-conference campaign averaging 16.5 points and shooting and outstanding, .915 percent from the charity stripe. Sophomore Whitney Wiley, who joined the team in December, is the other Lady Bulldog who is scoring in double-figures at 11.3 points per outing.
Supporting Hipps and Wiley is freshman Paris Alston, who has made her presence known quickly, as she is averaging 9.3 points and 7.3 rebounds per game alongside junior transfer Joi Walker who is averaging 8.5 points and 7.4 rebounds per contest.
UMES will take a 2-7, 1-0 MEAC record into Saturday's contest after falling to North Carolina Central, 60-69, on Thursday. On the season, McBride leads the Lady Hawks in scoring and rebounding at 16.4 and 8.9 respectively.
The Lady Bulldogs will close out an eight-game road swing when they travel to Dover, DE, on Monday, Jan. 11 to take on the Lady Hornets of Delaware State in a MEAC contest. The Lady Bulldogs will return home on Saturday, Jan. 16 when they host Morgan State in a 4 p.m. contest.
