SC State Women Closeout Non-Conference Season with a 60-49 Victory over Savannah State

Lady Bulldog Snaps Four-Game Losing Streak

Savannah, GA (1-4-10)—The SC State women's basketball team closed out its 2009-10 non-conference play with a 60-49 victory over Savannah State. The win marks the second time this season the Lady Bulldogs have defeated the Lady Tigers (60-50 on 11-15-09). The victory also snaps a four-game losing streak for SC State.
            The first half of the contest saw five ties and three lead changes between the teams. The half also included a set of runs with neither team managing to jump ahead by more than six points. SC State (5-7) put together the final run of the half as they went on an 18-11 run to end the half up by two, 25-23.
            The Lady Bulldogs began the second half with a 21-2 run to jump ahead of the Lady Tigers, 46-25 at the 12:32 mark. Savannah State (8-10) staged a late second-half run to pull within eight, 56-48, with just under two minutes remaining but could not get any closer, falling by 11, 60-49.
            SC State had two players to score in double-figures led by Whitney Wiley, who scored a season-high 17 points. Sophilia Hipps contributed 11 points and Joi Walker pulled down a game-high eight rebounds for the Lady Bulldogs in the victory.
Savannah State was led in scoring by Crissa Jackson with 12 points. Alisha Nelson and Carlita Johnson contributed five rebounds each in the loss.
            SC State will open its 2009-10 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) play when they travel to Princess Anne, MD and Dover, DE to take on the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (1-9-10) and Delaware State (1-11-10) respectively. The Lady Bulldogs will return home from its eight game road trip on Saturday, Jan. 16, 2010 when they host the Lady Eagles of Coppin State in its MEAC home-opener.
