TALLAHASSEE, FL—The South Carolina State men's and women basketball team will battle Florida A&M in a pivotal Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference doubleheader, which gets underway at 5:30 p.m. at The Alfred Lawson Center. The men's game will be aired-lived on ESPNU beginning at 9 p.m.
The men's team is coming off an impressive 58-55 over Bethune-Cookman Saturday while the women's suffered a tough loss to The Lady Wildcats of Bethune-Cookman 71-64.
Senior All-MEAC guard/forward leads the men in scoring with 14.5 ppg, while JUCO transfer Darnell Porter is second with 13.4 points per contest. Senior reserve forward Arsenio Williams gives the Bulldogs that extra lift off the bench averaging 8.6 ppg and 4.7 rbg. Flagler also leads the team in rebounding with 6.3 boards.
Coach Doug Robertson's team is paced by senior guard Sophilia Hipps with 14.8 points per game and sophomore Whitney Wiley, who is contributing 13.3 points each outing. Sophomore Paris Alston is the top rebounder with 6.4 per game and is also averaging 8.7 points for SC State.
In Saturday's loss, the Lady Bulldogs (6-13, 1-6) were led by junior Brijan Turner with 15 points.
The SC State men (10-8, 4-3) with the 58-55 defeat over the Wildcats picked up their fourth league win of the season. It was junior Tyvon Williams leading the way with 13 points, while senior Jason Flagler and junior Carrio Bennett contributed 10 in the victory.
The FAMU men (5-15, 2-5) are coming off an impressive 75-69 win over Winston-Salem State. Coach Eugene Harrison's team which is led by – Brandon Bryant (9.8 ppg), and Larry Jackson leads the team in rebounding (6.5 rpg).
