ORANGEBURG, SC – Chamblee Charter High School will rename its gymnasium in honor of late South Carolina State Hall of Famer Theodore "Teddy" Carter during a 6 p.m. special ceremony May 31 at the school, located at 3688 Dunwoody Road, Chamblee, GA. The ceremony is open to the public.
Carter, a Bamberg, SC native and football standout at SC State during the mid-70s, was the campus supervisor and an assistant coach in track and football at Chamblee Charter for approximately 12 years. The 58-year old died May 7, 2015 in Duluth, GA.
As a wide receiver for the Bulldogs (1975-1978), Carter led a run-oriented offense in receptions as a sophomore in 1976 when SC State was named National Black College Champion. He was inducted into the SCSU Athletics Hall of Fame in 2000 and was named to the school's Centennial (1907-2007) Football Team in 2007.
Carter earned a bachelor's in physical education at SC State in 1979 and was commissioned a Second Lieutenant in the United States Army, where he served 20 years before retiring as a major.
