ORANGEBURG, SC – The South Carolina State Bulldogs conducted their 11th spring practice and their second scrimmage Saturday morning. The two-hour workout received mixed reviews from head coach Buddy Pough, who is beginning his 13th season at the helm and was recently given a three-year contract extension.
"We got a lot of work done but we still have a ways to go, we need to improve," Pough said. "No 11 (practice) is in the books but I need to see some more improvement if we are to develop the type of personnel that will give us a chance to be a good team.
"We still have some issues, especially along the offensive line, but I thought we were somewhat better than last week (during the team's first scrimmage). We are still a work in progress but we have to keep improving.
"We continue to work to develop the individual and team-style operations to make sure we get in the needed defensive and offensive production."
During the first half of Saturday's scrimmage, the Bulldogs concentrated on their passing game, while the last half of the drill put more emphasis on the running game.
"We concentrated early on a good bit of passing," said Pough "as we wanted to conceptualize what we wanted to do in our throw game. We had some 7 on 7 without the offensive and defensive lines. Then we had some heavy emphasis on our running game."
Pough said that, with just four workouts left, he and his staff would be watching the development of the defensive line and offensive line. He noted that the Bulldog quarterbacks (Tedarrius Wiley and Adrian Kollock) demonstrated pretty good throwing ability and had praise for the running backs, including redshirt sophomore Jalen "Scoot" Simmons, who looks to have completely recovered from an injury that kept him on the sideline all of the 2013 campaign. Simmons was one of three running backs to make it to the end zone during the scrimmage.
Also having a very productive day for the Bulldogs on offense were wide receiver
Austin Smith, who had three scores, wide receiver
Brandon King and tight end
Temarrick Hemingway.
The Bulldogs will take Sunday off before returning to the field Monday morning for a 7 p.m. workout. Pough's team will also practice at the same time Wednesday and Friday, before culminating spring drills Saturday with their annual Garnet and Blue spring game, beginning at 1 p.m.
