ORANGEBURG, SC – South Carolina State conducted its third of 15 spring football workouts early Saturday morning in cool temperatures, the Bulldogs finished up an approximate two-hour session that got underway at 10:30 a.m.
"We are so early in the process most of the guys are trying to find their way and see who is going to be what and where they can fit in," said Bulldog head coach Buddy Pough. ""You know with a new defensive coordinator in the mix, it's a big difference in our whole scheme of things and our guys are excited and have a lot of enthusiasm and seem to be adjusting well.
Pough said his team was making steady progress three sessions into the drills, which will culminate with the team's annual Garnet and Blue Game Apr. 12 at 1 p.m. Saturday's workout was the first in full gear for SC State.
"We are making strides," Pough stated. "We are still installing and trying to work on individual techniques on both sides of the ball. In some of our key positions like at quarterback in particular we have to keep working with those guys so they can give you a chance to win football games."
Pough, who is entering his 13th season at the helm for SC State, said he loves the enthusiasm from both the new and returning players during the early part of spring drills.
"We are always building off the fact that we are playoff team and we have to work extra hard to keep having continued success at this level," he said. Anytime you lose guys at key positions like an All-America linebacker in
Joe Thomas it's always hard to fill that void right away. But we feel comfortable about the young guys we have here that we will be fine moving forward."
SC State returns to the field Monday morning in a 6:30 a.m. practice.
