ORANGEBURG, SC -- South Carolina State continued preseason football workouts Wednesday with two practices – a 9:30 morning drill in shells and a 7:10 evening session.
In both workouts, the Bulldogs concentrated on special teams, with an emphasis on techniques and blocking drills. Coach Buddy Pough's teams also continued to work on techniques and some on offense and defense, with the running game installation and stopping the run. In the evening workout, it was perfect football weather with light scattered showers the Bulldogs also devoted some time to different phases of the installation scheme on both sides of the balls. It was a short session lasting only 1 hour 20 minutes ending with an enthusiastic goal line standout between the offense and defense.
"We had two lively practices today," Pough said. "We had good sessions and I think our players took advantage of being out here. I really enjoyed being in the atmosphere and around them, because them seem to have a pretty good idea of what they need to be doing."
"Tomorrow we go full gear and get a chance to do some live drills where we can put some pressure on some of the teams we are playing," stated Pough. "It should be a fun spirited practice in the morning session."
"We put in some goal line offense and defense near the end of our evening practice to see just who's tough and who we can depend on when we get down close," Pough said. "Too many times last year, we were unable to convert in those kinds of situations."
He did express some concern that several players were a bit banged up and unable to practice.
SC State will return to the practice field Thursday in early morning session at 9:30 a.m. and an evening practice.
