ORANGEBURG, SC – South Carolina State head football coach Oliver " Buddy" Pough announced the addition of three new assistants to the Bulldog coaching staff, along with two new assignment changes.
The new appointments complete the Bulldog staff, which was looking to replace three coaches, among them the offensive coordinator, offensive line coach and strength and conditioning.
The new coaches include Joe Blackwell, who returns for his second tenure as offensive coordinator and offense line coach; Steve Bird, wide receivers and special teams; and John Williams, who is also back as the head strength and condition coach.
Blackwell returns after brief stint at Norfolk State where he served as the interim offensive coordinator and tight ends coach for the Spartans from 2010-12; Bird brings over 25 years of coaching experience along with a wealth of knowledge on the collegiate level, he previously served as an offensive assistant at South Florida and prior to that was passing game coordinator/wide receivers coach at Bowling Green; Williams, also returns for his second stint with the Bulldogs, where he served in the same capacity from 2008-2010 before leaving for similar position at University of Kansas.
Pough also announced new coaching assignments, with Danny Lewis moving over to coach quarterbacks from running backs and Lee Chambers becoming running backs coach after coaching wide receivers.
Pough said he is excited about the new coaching changes and look forward to the Bulldogs preparing for preseason camp Aug.2.
