ORANGEBURG, SC – The SC State women's basketball team (1-8, 0-0 MEAC) will resume its schedule Monday (Dec. 30) -- following a short Christmas break -- when Coach Doug Robertson's team hosts Maryland Eastern Shore (3-8, 0-0 MEAC) in a 5:30 p.m. contest at Smith-Hammond-Middleton Memorial Center. Admission is $7 for adults and $5 for youth (17 and under).
The contest, only the second home contest for the Lady Bulldogs, will be the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference opener for both the visiting UMES Lady Hawks and SC State, which is seeking to snap a six-game losing streak.
SC State last saw action Dec. 22 when it lost 70-26 at 10th-ranked South Carolina. That contest was the final game in a six-game, 26-day road odyssey for Robertson's squad, which has had only eight to nine players in uniform all season.
Junior guard
Kourtney Williams is the top scorer for SC State with a 17.3 scoring mark and is second in rebounding with a 5.7 average. Also in double-figure scoring is redshirt sophomore guard
Mykala Jones, who is averaging 10.1 points each outing. Junior center
Persephone Goodwin is the top rebounder with 6.2 per game and also owns a 6.3 scoring average.
UMES, which is seeking to snap a losing streak that has spanned five games, last played Dec. 21 when it lost 85-61 at Mount St. Mary's during a five-game road trip. The Lady Hawks are led by junior guards Jessica Long (14.8 ppg, 3.4 rpg) and Shawnee Sweeney (11.8 ppg, 3.5 rpg).
Following Monday's contest, SC State will be idle for a week before hosting Southern Wesleyan Jan. 6, 2014 at 6 p.m.
