ORANGEBURG, SC – South Carolina State completed the fifth of 15 scheduled spring football workouts Tuesday evening. A portion of the session was used by the Bulldogs to prepare for their first scrimmage of the spring Thursday, beginning at 8 p.m. at O.C. Dawson Stadium.
“Overall, it (Tuesday) was a very good evening,” Bulldog head coach Buddy Pough said at the end of the Tuesday's drill. “We are showing signs of continued improvement.
“But, we are looking forward to Thursday when we have our first scrimmage,” he continued. “It should be pretty lively. I'm anxious to see just where we are. We have not had the real experience of seeing our players perform under the conditions of a real live scrimmage. We will have that chance on Thursday.
“The staff would like to see both sides of the football be successful, and we want to see the strides the players have made in what we are trying to teach them.”
Pough noted that the numbers and depth this spring were better than previous springs and that he hoped this would lead to a good, efficient scrimmage. He said he and his staff would be taking a look at as many players as possible in order to determine who's going to be able to contribute to the 2012 team and its success.
He also commented about the progress of the three mid-year signees that are participating in spring drills – DT Javon Hargrave, WR/RB Deion Walker and LB Alkeem Thomas, as well as the Bulldog specialists. For the first time in four years, SC State will have a new kicker and punter as Blake Erickson, who handled both chores for four seasons, was among 18 seniors from the 2011 squad.
