SAVANNAH, GA – SC State junior Asheton Jordan galloped for a 151 yards and a touchdown in 15 attempts to lead the Bulldogs to a 20-10 victory over Savannah State Saturday at T.A. Wright Stadium in the season finale for both teams.

Coach Buddy Pough's team also got a 28-yard scoring run from quarterback Richard Cue and  field goals of 41 and 45 yards from placekicker Blake Erickson in notching the victory to end the season at 7-4 overall and 6-2 in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference and in a tied for second place in the conference.

The host Tigers, who celebrated “Senior Day” with one of their best showings of the season despite the loss, ended the season at 1-10 and 1-7 in league play. The Savannah State scoring came on Derek Williams' 33-yard field goal and quarterback Antonio Bostick's 27-yard scoring pass to Brian Lackey.

For the first time in four seasons, SC State will not be in the FCS playoffs as Norfolk State earned the 2011 MEAC title and will represent the league this season. The Bulldogs had won or shared the last three crowns and made three consecutive appearances to the playoffs.

Saturday's win over Savannah State gave the Bulldogs their ninth winning season in as many years under Pough and their 10th straight year with a better than .500 season.

“The win was not very pretty, but we got our seventh win of the season,” Pough said following the contest. “We didn't play particularly well but we are happy to get the victory. It's the first time in four years that we won't be going to the playoffs but I appreciate what this team did.

“We were young in a lot of positions,” he continued, “And we had a lot of the injuries that slowed us a bit. A 7-4 season was not exactly what we wanted but we have a chance to work on things during the offseason, solve some of our issues and come back strong next season.”

SC State scored the game's first 17 points and seemed poised to run away with the contest before the Tiger defense stiffened.

Erickson got the Bulldogs on the scoreboard 3-0 when he culminated an 8-play, 62-yard drive with a 51-yard field goal with 8:24 on the first-period clock. The lead swelled to 10-0 with 5:02 still left in the period on Cue's 28-yard scoring run which capped a 5-play, 57-yard drive. Erickson added the PAT.

Jordan's 15-yard scoring run with 9:33 left in the second put Pough's team ahead 17-0, following the extra point. The Tigers' Williams nailed a 33-yard field goal with 5:12 left in the period, slicing the Bulldog lead to 17-3 at the half.

Neither team was able to muster a score in the third quarter, however, the host Tigers pulled to within 17-10 with 12:03 left in the game when Williams connected with Lackey on a 27-yard scoring pass. Williams added the PAT.

Savannah State stopped SC State on downs and got possession with a chance to tie, but the Bulldog defense forced a punt, giving Pough's team possession with 7:17 on the clock. Erickson closed out the scoring for the contest when he added his second field goal of the game, this one coming from 45 yards away with 4:16 left and a 20-10 SC State win.

The Bulldogs totaled 418 yards in the game, with 276 coming on the ground. Savannah State amassed 232 yards, but just 56 on the ground in t he contest witnessed by a crowd of 4,069.
