Elmore Leads SC State To Victory Over Mississippi Valley St. 44-0

ORANGEBURG, SC-- Sophomore wide receiver Lennel Elmore had a career-night with 12 catches for 156 yards, breaking former All-MEAC standout Tavarus Morgan record for Total Receptions in game. While, SC State cruised to an 44-0 victory over Mississippi Valley State Saturday night at Oliver C. Dawson Stadium.
Senior quarterback Malcolm Long tied Reese Mc Campbell record for Most Career Passing Attempts throwing 21-28 for 232 yards and one touchdown. Long now has 707 for a career.
“We executed well tonight with a lot of new guys in the mix,” stated SC State head coach Buddy Pough. They had hard time blocking us up front and we made some big plays to take control of the game.”
The Bulldogs jumped out early 14-0 in the first quarter with senior running back Chris Massey breaking loose for a 28-yard scamper to make the score 7-0 at the 12:48 mark. Massey found the end zone once again on a five yard punch to put the Bulldogs ahead 14-0 with 10:08 left in the quarter.
Junior kicker Blake Erickson's 25-yard field goal with 3:41 left in the first-half gave SC State a go ahead score of 17-0. Long's six yard toss to sophomore running back Devin Wherry with 0:58 seconds left closed out the first-half with the Bulldogs leading 24-0.
Running back Asheton Jordan picked up where he left off against Georgia Tech in the second-half with a 3-yard and one yard touchdown runs to give SC State a commanding 38-0 lead early in the fourth quarter.
Sophomore quarterback Derrick Wiley returned from injury to throw a 32-yard toss to Lennel Elmore late in the fourth quarter to close out the game 44-0. South Carolina State improves to 1-1 on the season, while Mississippi Valley State falls to 0-2.
Senior kick/punt returner Richard Christie finished the game with six punt returns for 106 yards on the evening, while Asheton Jordan led the ground attack with 12 carries for 79 yards and two touchdowns. Senior running back Chris Massey also had solid rushing attack with 10 rushes for 75 yards and two touchdowns.
The Bulldog offense racked up 489 yards total offense, while the SC State defense held Mississippi Valley State to just 44 yards total offense and -9 yards rushing. Leading the way on defense was junior linebacker Donovan Richard with eight tackles, while Pat Washington finished with four tackles and two sacks and three tackles for loss.
South Carolina State returns to Columbia, SC next week to take on the Tigers of Benedict College in the South Carolina HBCU Classic, Kick-off begins at 2 p.m.
