ORANGEBURG, SC – South Carolina State conducted its second preseason football workout in shorts and helmets Friday as Bulldog players were greeted with slightly cooler temperatures than on Thursday due to an early afternoon storm prior to the drill.
SC State's Buddy Pough said he and his staff were happy to have day two in the books and added that his players would be tested a bit more on Saturday in the team's third practice as the Bulldogs would put on shoulder pads for the first time in an afternoon drill following their “Press and Media Day” in the morning.
“Day two is in the books,” said Pough. “Although the storm cooled things a bit, it was still pretty hot but we got through the afternoon. I thought our players moved around pretty good and were getting acclimated to what we are trying to do.
“They (the players) will face a little different situation on Saturday when we put on shoulder pads,” he continued. “Our first two practices have been in just shorts and helmets so when you add shoulder pads, it is a bit of a shock to many of them.”
For the second straight day, SC State defensive back Christian Thompson, who is projected as a starter, suffered cramps, but Pough said he was not overly concerned and was sure Thompson would work through things and be okay.
SC State will conduct its “Press and Picture Day” beginning at 9 a.m. at Oliver C. Dawson Stadium, and then hold its third practice in the afternoon at 3:10.
