ORANGEBURG, SC – South Carolina State completed its eighth preseason workout Thursday and with a growing number of players suffering some bumps and bruises, head coach Buddy Pough will give his team a break Thursday.
SC State was scheduled to conduct the second of four two-a-day drills Thursday. Instead, the Bulldogs will hold only an evening practice, beginning at 6 p.m. The workout will be in full pads. Pough called off the 8:30 morning session “in order to give the guys a chance to get some treatment for a few bumps and bruises and get their legs back.”
During Wednesday's drill, SC State moved closer to completing the installation of the offensive and defensive schemes the team will be using this fall. Despite high temperatures, the workouts continue to be spirited, Pough noted.
On Friday, the Bulldogs will return to their regular schedule with a 3:10 p.m. drill in shells (shorts, helmets and shoulder pads).
“We will be looking to get in a solid day on Friday,” Pough said. “We hope the little time (Thursday morning) away from the field will refresh our guys and they will come back eager to continue our preparation.”
SC State will conduct its first scrimmage of the preseason Saturday morning at 10. The Bulldogs open the 2010 campaign Sept. 4 at Georgia Tech in a 1 p.m. start at Atlanta.
