Former SC State Basketball Standout to be Laid to Rest

Is the Second Former SC State Athlete to Die in as Many Weeks

Homegoing Services Set

ORANGEBURG, SC – Funeral services for former South Carolina State basketball standout Ernest “Sonny” Jackson will be held Friday (Mar. 26) at 11 a.m. at the Mt. Moriah Pentecostal Church, 7909 Stenton Ave., Philadelphia. Pa.  Jackson, a 1964 SC State alumnus, died Mar. 21 after an extended illness.

A Philadelphia native, Jackson helped the Bulldogs to back-to-back Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference regular-season titles in 1962 and 1963. He was ranked among the top scorers in small colleges in 1963 when he averaged 22.4 points and earned All-America honors. In 1964, he helped the Bulldogs capture their first SIAC tournament title in almost 20 years.

Arrangements are being handled by Yarborough and Rocke Funeral Home of Philadelphia.

Jackson is the second former Bulldog athlete to die in as many weeks. Charlotte, NC native Thomas O'Leary, 54, a starting offensive lineman for the Bulldogs in the late 70s, was funeralized Mar. 20 in Charlotte. O'Leary died Mar. 15 after suffering a fatal stab wound.
