SC State to Host N.C. A&T State in MEAC Doubleheader

ORANGEBURG, SC – The South Carolina State men's and women's basketball team will battle archrival N.C.A&T State in a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference doubleheader, which gets underway at 2 p.m. at S-H-M Memorial Center with the women's contest. The men's game will follow at approximately 4 p.m.

The men's team is coming off an impressive 87-75 victory over Coppin State Monday, while the women's dropped their fourth straight league game to The Lady Hawks of Coppin State 82-72.

Senior All-MEAC guard/forward leads the men in scoring with 14.3 ppg, while JUCO transfer Darnell Porter is second with 13.2 points per contest. Senior reserve forward Arsenio Williams gives the Bulldogs that extra lift off the bench averaging 8.9 ppg and 5.1 rbg. Flagler also leads the team in rebounding with 5.6 boards.

             Coach Doug Robertson's team is paced by senior guard Sophilia Hipps with 15.4 points per game and sophomore Whitney Wiley, who is contributing 12.1 points each outing. Sophomore Paris Alston is the top rebounder with 6.3 per game and is also averaging 8.7 points for SC State.

In Monday's loss, the Lady Bulldogs were led by transfer Whitney Wiley with 20 points, while Paris Alston chipped in 14 points and 10 rebounds.

The SC State men (8-7, 2-2)  bounced back  after a tough loss 72-67 to Morgan State on last week  to pick up their second league win of the season over Coppin State 87-65 on Monday. It was senior Jason Flagler leading the way for the Bulldogs with 26 points and nine rebounds, while junior Darnell Porter contributed 25 points and eight rebounds in the victory.

         The N.C.A&T men (5-13, 0-4) are coming off a 55-65 loss against Hampton University. It was the fourth straight league loss for Coach Jerry Eaves team which is led by  – Dwayne Joshua (16.3 ppg), Tavarus Alston (14.9 ppg), Thomas Coleman (10.8) and Nic Simpson (10.4 ppg).

 All high school students with a valid ID will be admitted to South Carolina State's Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference doubleheader against North Carolina A&T Saturday for $1.00 as the university sponsors “High School Dollar Day.”

        To take advantage of the special rate, the students must get to Smith-Hammond-Middleton Memorial Center before halftime of the women's contest, which gets underway at 2 p.m. The men's game follows at 4 p.m.
