ORANGEBURG, SC—Senior forward/center Marie Reid tossed in 18 points but it wasn’t enough as the South Carolina State Lady Bulldogs suffered a tough 69-51 loss to The Lady Eagles of Coppin State Saturday at Smith-Hammond-Middleton Memorial Center.
Coppin State had four players in double-figures with senior Danielle Anders leading the way with 22 points and eight rebounds, Whitney Cunningham added 12, and Crystal Washington and Jeanine Manely chipped in 10 each.
The first-half was all Coppin State jumping out to a 16 point lead, 33-17 on a jumper by Shante Cummings with 1:51 left in the half. A pair of free-throws by Kristin Johnson cut the Lady Eagles lead to 13, 20-33 ending the half.
A Jennifer Martin jumper gave Coppin State’s its biggest lead 18, 49-31 at the 12:38 mark. The closest the Lady Bulldogs would get was 10, 59-49 on a jumper by Jenell Moore with 3:06 left in the game.
Coppin State proved to be too much pulling ahead by 18, 69-51 on a layup by Danielle Anders and sealing the victory for the Lady Eagles.
South Carolina State falls to 5-12 overall, 2-7 in the conference, while Coppin State improves to 8-12 overall, 7-3 in the league.
Senior guard Kristin Johnson chipped in 10 in the loss for South Carolina State.
The Lady Bulldogs will return to action on Monday when they host Morgan State University in a 5:30 p.m. tip-off.
