Sr., Marie Reid
Sr. Marie Reid

ORANGEBURG, SC – South Carolina State’s Marie Reid tossed in a game-high 25 points, but it was not nearly enough as the Lady Bulldogs fell 73-56 to visiting Howard Monday night at Smith-Hammond-Middleton Memorial Center.

Sophilia Hipps was the only other SC State player in double figures with 10 points as Coach Doug Robertson’s team lost for the fifth consecutive time to dip to 5-18 and 2-10 in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference.

Jenell Moore pulled down a team-high nine rebounds to go along with seven points and Shontay Wiley, the MEAC Rookie of the Week, handed out six assists and scored six points in the loss

The Lady Bison captured only their second road win of the campaign in improving to 5-19 and 4-7 in the conference.

Howard was led by Zykia Brown with 20 points. Morgan Neal chipped in 16, along with eight rebounds and Tamaya Daniels 14 points and nine boards.

Howard, who earned a sweep of the series with SC State with Monday’s triumph, took charge early, breaking on top 10-2 on a Brown layup with 15:43 left in the opening period.

A 3-pointer by Natalie Day with 9:07 on the first-period clock put the visitors ahead 22-7 and Howard went on to a 37-24 lead at the half.

SC State was never able to cut into the lead and fell behind by 18 points, 53-35, with 13:03 to play. SC State never seriously challenged the rest of the way.

The Lady Bulldogs return to action Saturday when they travel to Norfolk, Va. to take on Norfolk State in the first game of an MEAC doubleheader beginning at 4 p.m.
