ORANGEBURG, SC – Former Orangeburg-Wilkinson women's basketball standout Sonya Wilson is included in the South Carolina State 2016 Hall of Fame Class scheduled for induction Friday at Smith-Hammond-Middleton Memorial Center on the campus.
The event gets underway with a 6 p.m. reception, with the enshrinement ceremony set for 7 p.m. Tickets are $50 each and $450 for a table of ten. Call 803-536-8579 to purchase tickets.
Joining Wilson in the 2016 Class are David DeShawn Baker (football), Sharonda Coleman-Singleton, posthumous (track), James Evans (football), William "Will" Ford (football), Timothy Kemp (track), Albert Lester, posthumous (football), Leon Myers (contributor), Darryl Reeves (track), Eugene "Gene" Richards (baseball), Jeffery Washington (wrestling) and the 1995-96 men's basketball team.
Wilson, who led the O-W women to the 1987 AAAA state championship, played a key role in the success of SC State women's basketball teams during her tenure (1991-1994) at the university, earning All-MEAC accolades two seasons. She helped the Lady Bulldogs to three MEAC regular season titles and two MEAC tournament championships, and was the 1993 MEAC Tournament Most Outstanding Player after leading SC State to the title. She averaged 13.8 points, led the team in assists (81), 3-pointers (68) and 3-point percentage (.38).
During the 1993-94 campaign, Wilson averaged 14.4 points, led the team in 3-pointers (41), 3-point percentage (.37) and free throw percentage (.75) as the Lady Bulldogs posted a 24-5 record.
The Orangeburg native, earned her bachelor's from SC State in 1994, played professionally in Switzerland two years before embarking on a college coaching career as a graduate assistant at Kentucky State, and an assistant at SC State, Fordham and Savannah State. Today, she is employed by the United States Department of Agriculture and resides in Alexandria, Va.
