AMERICUS, GA – South Carolina State assistant men's basketball coach
Travis Garrett was named the head coach at South Georgia Technical College in Americus, Georgia.
"I've had a wonderful experience working with the Bulldog men's basketball program and the coaching staff. Coach
Murray Garvin vision for the program is very clear and the coaching staff's comradery and singleness in purpose made the transition very smooth," said Garrett. "I must say, I have learned a lot and met some great people during my time at SC State, but the opportunity to become a head coach again is something I could not pass up."
Garrett is only the fourth head coach in the history of the South Georgia Technical College Jets basketball program which was reinstated in 2001. SGTC competes in Division I in the Georgia Collegiate Athletic Association and the National Junior College Athletic Association.
Garrett comes to SGTC after spending the past season on the Bulldog men's basketball coaching staff and the previous seven years at USC Salkehatchie where he resurrected the basketball program in 2007 after it was discontinued in 1996.
Garrett led the team to Region X and District X runner-up positions in both 2012 and 2013 and a regular-season championship in 2008 (his second season). In 2013, the Indians qualified for the NJCAA Men's Basketball National Championship in Hutchinson, Kansas. That team was the first in USC Salkehatchie history to participate in a national championship tournament.
He also served as the head coach at Clinton Junior College (NJCAA Division I), and had assistant stints at Chipola College in Marianna, Fla; Northeastern University at Boston, Mass; and Bethune Cookman University in Daytona Beach, FL.
In addition to his success as a coach at the collegiate level, Garrett was also a standout player on the court. He was named one of the Top 100 Junior College Players in the US by Street and Smith Magazine in 1992 as a member of the College of Central Florida squad in the JUCO division. He earned Trans America Athletic Conference All-Tournament honors, in 1994 at Stetson University in Deland, Fla.
"Coach Garrett was a great addition to our staff this past season and his knowledge of the game and enthusiasm for teaching young people will be thoroughly missed next season," said SC State head coach
Murray Garvin. "It really speaks volumes of what we are doing here at the university, when that one of our assistant coaches land one of the top JUCO jobs in the country."
Garrett holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Sports Management from Stetson University and an Associate of Arts degree from the College of Central Florida in Ocala, Florida.
