GREENSBORO, N.C. – The South Carolina men's outdoor track and field team scored nine points on Friday, while the women's team picked up two points in the 2015 MEAC Outdoor Championships at the Irwin Belk Track on the campus of North Carolina A&T State University.
Freshman
Demek Kemp won the bronze medal in the long jump to score six points for the Bulldogs with a jump of 23 feet, 3¼ inches (7.09 meters). The men also got three points from
Dwight Rogers who finished sixth in the decathlon with 5,540 points.
The Lady Bulldogs' two points came from
Jacoy Hutto's seventh-place finish in the heptathlon. One highlight of Friday's heptathlon events was Hutto winning the 800 meters in 2:34.12.
Five runners qualified for Saturday's finals. Kemp won his heat and posted the fastest time (10.39) in the semifinal round of the 100 meters. Jared Jeter also was the top finisher overall and in his heat in the 400 meters, running a time of 47.04 seconds.
Tenisha Stanley (100-meter hurdles; 14.10),
Moses Kennedy (110-meter hurdles; 14.46) and Antavia Owens (100 meters; 11.80) all advanced to the final round in their respective events.
Celeste Taylor finished ninth in the shot put (41-2½; 12.56 meters), while
Roderick Britt finished 10
th in the same event on the men's side. He hit a mark of 38-9½ (11.82 meters).
Elijah Case ran in the finals of the 1,500 meters and finished 15
th in 2:00.82.
The competition wraps up Saturday at 9 a.m. with field events including: men's and women's pole vault, javelin, and triple jump. The women's and men's 4x100m relays will begin the running finals at 1 p.m. Rounding out the evening's events will be the men's and women's 4x400m relay race at 4:20 p.m.
