MEAC Outdoor Track and Field Championships: Day 1 Update

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The South Carolina men's and women's outdoor track and field teams got off to a good start to the 2015 MEAC Outdoor Championships on Thursday at the Irwin Belk Track on the campus of North Carolina A&T State University.
 
SC State got four points each from Christopher Bonner and Marketa Marcanikova. Bonner finished fifth in the high jump after clearing 6 feet, 3¼ inches (1.91 meters). Marcanikova finished the 5,000-meter run in 18:09.20 to also place fifth.
 
Two Lady Bulldogs qualified for the finals in two running events. Nikkia Jefferson ran a time of 1:01.73 in to 400-meter hurdles, while reigning MEAC Track Athlete of the Week Karissa Bertling ran a qualifying time of 24.08 in the 200 meters.
 
Jeffrey Jones also qualified for the finals of the 200m after running a 21.58 in the semifinals.
 
Dwight Rogers is competing in the decathlon and completed the 100 and 400 meters, long and high jumps and the shot put today. Jacoy Hutton is representing the Lady Bulldogs in the heptathlon. She successfully finished all four of Thursday's events (100-meter hurdles, high jump, shot put and 200 meters), setting personal records in each event. Both the decathlon and heptathlon will conclude on Friday.
 
Throwers Roderick Britt, Deja Jackson and Biqualia Scott competed in the finals of the discus on Thursday. On the men's side, Britt was 13th after hitting a mark of 128-7 (39.20 meters), while Jackson (121-7; 37.05 meters) and Scott (117-3; 35.73 meters) finished 15th and 16th, respectively, on the women's side.
 
The Men's and Women's Outdoor Track and Field Championships continue Friday, May 1, with the women's heptathlon and men's decathlon at 9 a.m. Other field events on Friday's slate include the men's and women's long jump and shot put. The afternoon continues with the men's and women's semifinal in the 400m, 100m dash, 800m, women's 100m hurdles and men's 110m hurdles.
 
The competition wraps up Saturday at 9 a.m. with field events including: men's and women's pole vault, javelin, and triple jump. The women's and men's 4x100m relays will begin the running finals at 1 p.m. Rounding out the evening's events will be the men's and women's 4x400m relay race at 4:20 p.m.
