SC State Inducts 11 And Two Teams Into the Athletic Hall of Fame

ORANGEBURG, SC – Five former football standouts and a Major League Baseball star were among the honorees inducted into the South Carolina State Athletic Hall of Fame Friday night at Smith-Hammond-Middleton Memorial Center.

This year's 2014 Hall of Fame class included RB Michael Hicks (1993-95), LB Rudolph Bryant (1973-76), DB Jermaine Derricott (1994-98), RB Charles Burgess (1974-77) and OL Leroy Robinson (1976-80), all one-time gridiron stars for the Bulldogs, along with Willie Mays Aikens (1973-74), who went on to an outstanding career major league baseball.

They were joined by five other individuals and two teams during the induction, which recognized them for outstanding contributions to SC State athletics.

Other honorees were Orangeburg natives Kenneth Brown (track & field 1974-77) and Martin Roache (golf 1988-92), along with Sandra Gadsden (basketball 1978-81), Dr. Christopher Mazoue' (sports medicine 2003-present) and Dr. Stefan Montgomery (sports medicine 2005-present).

One of two teams also honored was the 1979-80 swimming team, which captured the first of three straight National Black Swimming Championships, and the 1982-83 women's basketball team, which earned the MEAC's first berth in the NCAA Women's Championship.
