SC State Splits Doubleheader With Newberry Tuesday

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 ORANGEBURG,SC—The South Carolina State women's softball team split a pair of non-conference contest with Newberry College, winning the first game 8-4 before dropping a 8-3 decision , Tuesday at the Lady Bulldog Softball Field.

South Carolina State improves to 4-8 overall, while Newberry is 11-6 on the season.

In game one, both teams jumped out to a quick hitting battle with three runs each in the first inning to have 3-3 all tie. The Bulldogs purely dominated the second inning scoring four unanswered runs in the second inning to jump out to a 7-3 advantage early on. Freshman infielder Jasmine Harris hit a solo homerun in the bottom of the fourth inning gave SC State the momentum they needed to claim an 8-4 victory. Senior Vianney Gomez was the winning pitcher.

The Lady Wolves controlled the tempo in game two, scoring three runs in the second inning after being down 2-1 to jump out to a 4-2 lead heading into the third. A homerun by freshman infielder Madison Burnett  deep in the third inning, followed by three runs each in the fifth and sixth inning gave the Lady Wolves the edge they needed  to secure a 8-3 victory over host South Carolina State in the second of a non-conference doubleheader.

South Carolina State will return to action on Saturday (March 8) when they travel to Spartanburg, SC to take on the University of South Carolina-Upstate in a non-conference doubleheader. First pitch is 12 p.m., followed by a 2 p.m. contest.
