ORANGEBURG, SC—Freshman infielder Jasmine Harris nailed two homeruns on the day as South Carolina State swept UMES 9-1, 8-0 in MEAC softball doubleheader action Thursday at the Lady Bulldog Softball Field.

The Lady Bulldogs improved to 7-13 overall, while the Lady Hawks fall to 3-23 on the season.

Despite both schools being members of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC), the game was played as a non-conference match. SC State competes in the Southern Division, while UMES competes in the Northern Division.

Senior Vianney Gomez picked up her third pitching win for the Lady Bulldogs in the opening game. Gomez pitched a full 5.0 innings, while K. Hitch suffered the loss for the Lady Hawks.

After being down 1-0 in the first inning, the Lady Bulldogs racked up an amazing seven runs in the bottom of the second inning.  During the big inning, Jasmine Harris recorded her second home run of the season, while in her rookie campaign. Junior infielder/pitcher Mikala Johnson got a part of the homerun action connecting on a solo homer in left field for her first of the season.

SC State scored two more runs in to close out a 9-1 victory in the top of the fifth in Game 1.  In the second of the doubleheader Harris put the Lady Bulldogs on the boards connecting on her second homer of the day deep in centerfield for a 2-0 lead in the first inning.

SC State held the UMES scoreless scoring six unanswered runs to take an 8-0 lead heading into the fourth inning. The Lady Bulldogs sealed the win in the bottom of the fifth to snap a two-game losing skid.

Freshman Jareece Sayles pitched her third win of the season in the second game of the day.

SC State returns to action on Saturday (March.29) when they travel to Greensboro, NC to take on MEAC rival the Lady Aggies on N.C. A&T State in a southern division league doubleheader. First pitch is 1 p.m., followed by the 3 p.m. start in Game 2.
