SC State Battles But Fall Short on Day Two of The Citadel Invitational

Desire Waller Earns Second All-Tournament Honor of the Season

Charleston, S.C. (Sept. 13-14, 2013) —The SC State women's volleyball team fought hard but dropped both matches on day two of the The Citadel Invitational. Senior Desire Waller picked up her second all-tournament honor of the season.

In the first match of the day, SC State fell to Radford, 0-3, (10-25, 21-25, 23-25). The match with the Highlanders was one of the most competitive matches of the season for the Lady Bulldogs. In three sets there were 13 ties and eight lead changes. After dropping set one, SC State began set two very aggressive, displaying a lot of tenacity and hustle. The Lady Bulldogs used a 4-0 run midway through the set to take an 11-7 advantage. SC State maintained the momentum over the next 12 exchanges before Radford picked up its offensive intensity. The Highlanders used a 7-2 run of their own to take the 20-19 lead and never to relinquish it. Radford closed set two with an overall 12-4 run to take the set 25-21 victory. SC State jumped out to a 10-4 advantage to open set three. Radford then used a 7-1 run to tie the set at 11-11. The teams went back-and-forth over the next 16 exchanges with neither team taking more than a one point advantage, until SC State scored three straight points off two service aces by Taylor Bailey followed by a Radford error to give the Lady Bulldogs the 22-19 advantage. The Highlanders then scored the next six-of-seven points to take set three 23-25 and the match 3-0.

Senior Desire Waller recorded 11 kills with six digs while Victoria Ferguson picked up 12 digs in the match for SC State. Radford was led by Rachel Wiechecki with 12 kills while Kelby Jackson had a game-high 14 digs in the win.

In its final match of the tournament, the Lady Bulldogs fell to Charleston Southern, 0-3, (15-25, 15-25, 18-25). Charleston Southern controlled the match early, as they started set one a 5-2 run and would enjoy their biggest lead of 14, 22-8, late in the set. SC State did have a spark late scoring the last seven-of-10 points as they dropped set one, 25-15. The teams exchanged side-outs over the first 24 points of set two before the Buccaneers regained control. Charleston Southern rattled off the next 11 points to take the 23-12 advantage. The Buccaneers would go on to take set two 25-15. Charleston Southern once again jumped out early to start set three. The Buccaneers scored the first five points of the set before pushing its lead to 7-2. The Lady Bulldogs would continue to fight, pulling within two points, 13-11, midway through the set. SC State remained within two points over the next four exchanges. Charleston Southern pushed its lead to three, 16-13, before enjoying its biggest lead of six, 19-13, late in the set. SC State cut the deficit to four, 20-16, but could not get any closer, dropping set three 25-18, and the match 0-3.

Waller recorded her third double-kill match of the tournament with a game-high 12 kills with six digs. Ferguson and sophomore Melanie Williams picked up double-digit digs with 12 and 10, respectively for the Lady Bulldogs who dropped to 0-9 on the season.

Charleston Southern was led by Katrina Houston with 10 kills. The Buccaneers had three players to finish with double-digit digs led by Maggie Murphy with a game-high 17. Kayla Klinger and Siraya Windsor each picked up 13 digs.

SC State will host Wofford on Tuesday, Sept. 17, in its 2013 home-opener. First serve is set for 6 p.m. in Dukes Gymnasium.
