Five Bulldog Track & Field Athletes Qualify for 2012 NCAA Division I Outdoor Track and Field East Preliminary

Orangeburg, S.C.—Five combined athletes from the SC State men's and women's track and field teams have qualified for the NCAA 2012 Outdoor Track and Field East Preliminary Round. The prelims will be held Thursday-Saturday, May 24-26, 2012 at Hodges Stadium on the campus of the University of the North Florida. Only the top 48 athletes in each event in the region qualify for the prelims.

The qualifiers for the Bulldog women include senior Alexandria Jones in the 200 and 400 meters 20th and 21st, respectively), senior Shamire Rothmiller in the shot put (37th), and junior Yazmin Hicks in 200 meters (39th). On the men side junior Donta Young has hit the mark in the 110 meter hurdles (22nd), and senior Marcus Stephens in the 45th position in in the triple jump.

“I am extremely proud of all these athletes, they have worked exceptionally hard over the course of the year,” said fifth year head coach Tyree Price. “Last season we had only one athlete to qualify for the East Prelims and this year we have five total which shows a small improvement but improvement nonetheless. I think all these athletes have the potential to do well in the meet.”

The prelims get underway on Thursday, May 24 at 11 a.m., with the men's javelin and conclude with the men's 4x400 meter relay on Saturday, May 26.
