SC State Finishes 8th at the 2012 MEAC Outdoor Track & Field Championships

Rothmiller Picks Up Her Third Straight Most Outstanding Field Athlete

Rothmiller earned her third straight Most Outstanding Field Athlete Award
Greensboro, N.C.—The SC State women's track and field team finished eighth (8th) at the 2012 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Outdoor Track and Field Championships.  The three day championships were contested at the Irwin Belk Track on the campus of North Carolina A&T State University in Greensboro, last weekend (May 3-5).

For the third straight year, Shamire Rothmiller earned the Most Outstanding Field Athlete of the meet as she finished first in the discus, second in both the shot put and javelin for 26 points.  Rothmiller is the first athlete to win the Most Outstanding Field Athlete title three consecutive seasons.  The only other three-time Most Outstanding Athlete was Yvette Lewis of Hampton University who won the award from 2006-2008 when it was only being awarded to the one athlete (combined track and field). In all, Rothmiller completes her career with four total Outstanding Athlete Awards as she was named the 2012 Co-Most Outstanding Field Athlete during the MEAC Indoor Track & Field Championships.

The Lady Bulldogs, who finished the championships with 48 total points, also received a big contribution from senior Alexandria Jones who earned the bronze medal in both the 200 and 400 meters to finish the meet with 12 points.  Junior Yazmin Hicks was the other finalist for SC State as she placed fifth in the 100 meter dash and seventh in the 200 meter dash for five points.

Rothmiller and Jones each earned All-Conference honors for their finishes.  Rothmiller was named to the All-MEAC First Team (Discus) and the All-MEAC Second Team (Shot Put and Javelin), while Jones earned All-MEAC Third Team honors in both the 200 and 400 meters.

SC State women's track and field team also had two athletes named to the 2012 Men's and Women's Outdoor Track and Field All-Academic team.  Rothmiller and Tamara Smith were among 131 students named to the team which honors MEAC sophomore, junior and senior student-athletes with a 3.0 or better cumulative grade point average as well as transfer student-athletes who have been in residence at the institution for at least one year are eligible for All-Academic accolades.
