SC State Women’s 4x200 Meter Relay Earns Penn Relay Penny

Alexandria Jones maintain lead in 4x200 meter relay
Philadelphia, Pa. (Apr. 26-28, 2012)--The SC State women's track and field team had an impressive showing last weekend, April 26-28, at the 118th running of the Penn Relay Carnival.  The Lady Bulldogs earned a Penn Relay Penny in the 4x200 meter relay at the Carnival, which was contested at historic Franklin Field on the campus of the University of Pennsylvania.

SC State women's team earned fifth year head coach Tyree Price one of his first pennies ever at the Penn Relays, finishing first their heat of the 4x200 meter relay.  The team consisting of Yazmin Hicks, Antavia Owens, Sherrill McFarlane and Alexandria Jones captured heat six in a time of 1:39.11. The 4x100 meter relay team consisting of Hicks, Jones, Owens and Keziah Brown also fared well, as they finished fourth in the collegiate finals in a time of 45.98.

"I was very pleased with the way the young ladies ran,” said Coach Price.  “They ran pretty good races and were determined to leave with an award.”

The Lady Bulldogs sprint medley team (Hicks, Owens, McFarlane, Tamara Smith) finished 4th in heat four, running 1:39.11.  Individually, Shamire Rothmiller finished 14th in her flight of the shot-put with a distance of 12.87 meters (42'2 ¾”).

SC State will have no time to lavish in their success from the weekend as they head to Greensboro, N.C. to participate in the 2012 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Outdoor Track & Field Championships this week, Thursday-Saturday, May 3-5.  Coach Price will be looking to his veteran core to lead the Lady Bulldogs.

“I will be looking to my veterans (Rothmiller, Jones and Hicks) to lead the young group of women we have, said Price.”  “We have a lot of youth on the women's side and had to deal with some growing pains over the course of the year but I believe that we will be ok.”  Price continued, “Rothmiller should be a medalist in the shot put, discus, and the javelin while Hicks and Jones should be contenders in the sprints.”

The Championships, which will be contested at the Irwin Belk Track on the campus of North Carolina A&T State University, get underway on Thursday (May 3) at 1:15 p.m. with the first events of the women's Heptathlon.
