SC State Men’s Sprint Medley Relay Earns Penn Relay Penny

SC State men won its hit of the Sprint Medley Relay to Capture a Relay Penny
Philadelphia, Pa. (Apr. 26-28, 2012)--The SC State men's track and field team had an impressive showing last weekend, April 26-28, at the 118th running of the Penn Relay Carnival.  The Bulldogs captured the sprint medley relay (SMR) to earn a Penny at the Relays, which was contested at historic Franklin Field on the campus of the University of Pennsylvania.

SC State Men's team earned fifth year head coach Tyree Price his second penny on the day as they finished first their heat of the SMR.  The team consisting of Eric Sparkman, Karl Williams, Barry Bethea, and Seymour Walter ran a 3:25.82 en route to winning heat two of the SMR.  Both the 4x100 meter and 4x200 meter relay teams finished third in their respective heats at the Relays.  The 4x100 meter relay team of Donta Young, Marcus Stephens, Zackery Hasty and Williams finished with a 41.18 in heat four while the 4x200 meter relay team of Hasty, Sparkman, Young and Williams ran 1:26.80 to finish third in heat three.

"This weekend really showed us where our competitive spirit was,” said Coach Price.  “If the team can step on the track with this type of crowd and be competitive, I'm sure they will do just fine at the Mid-Eastern Athletic Championships this weekend.”

The Bulldog men had three individuals competing in the field events at the Relays as Hasty competed in the Long Jump, Stephens in the triple jump and Noel Facey in the shot put.  Stephens was the top finisher in the field for the Bulldogs as he placed seventh in his flight with a jump of 14.60 meters (47' 11”).

SC State will have just four days to recover before heading to Greensboro, N.C. this week, Thursday-Saturday, May 3-5, to participate in the 2012 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Outdoor Track & Field Championships.

Price is very optimistic about the men's chances at the Championships.  “The men's team has shown a lot of confidence with the each meet,” said Price.  “I think they can place in the top four if everyone come out and do their part.”  Price continued, “I think our points will come from both the track and the field side.”  Price will be looking to his senior leadership to lead the way in the field and some seasoned sophomore's to lead the Bulldog men on the track.  “Seniors Marcus Stephens and Noel Facey along with sophomore Xavier Molette should be medalist in the triple jump, discus and shot put, respectively in the field; with sophomores Barry Bethea and Seymour Walter should pace the men on the track in the 400 hurdles and 800 meter/1500 meter, respectively.  Junior Donta Young, who will be running in the outdoor championships for the first time in two years, should be a contender in the 110 and 400 meter hurdles.

The Championships, which will be contested at the Irwin Belk Track on the campus of North Carolina A&T State University, get underway on Thursday (May 3) at 1:15 p.m. with the first events of the women's Heptathlon.
