SC State Women 2nd after First Round of Gary Freeman/B-CU Golf Classic

Lady Bulldog Tiana Jones Tied for 2nd in Individual Category

DAYTONA BEACH, FL – The SC State women's golf team carded an 18-hole total of 330 for second place after the opening round of the Gary Freeman B-CU Spring Invitational being contested at the LPGA International Legends Course. Coach Sandy Burris' team trails only host Bethune-Cookman, which was at 318, in the 12-team field.

Leading the way for the Lady Bulldogs was sophomore Tiana Jones, who had an 18-hole total of 4-over 76 to tie for second place in the individual category. B-CU's Andrea Orozco was the first-round leader with a 2-over par 74.

Following Jones on the leaderboard for SC State were freshman Cheryl Chua who was 7-over par with a 79; graduate student Carmen Jones, who was 14-over with an 86; and Cherie Chua at 89, 17 over par. Also participating for the Lady Bulldogs was Cabriel Duren, who was taking a break from her starting point guard duties with the SC State women's basketball team, who had a 93.

Burris was pleased that her squad was in the hunt for the title despite not having one of its best scoring outings.

"It's the first tournament for us since our layoff from this fall and we are competing at a very difficult LPGA course," she said. "The 330 is not one of of best scores of the season, but it's enough to put us in a position to compete for a championship in a very prestigious event."

Third in the team standings behind B-CU and SC State was Hampton, which gave the MEAC a sweep of top three spots after 18 holes on the Par-72 course. In fourth place was Florida Atlantic, followed by Central Connecticut, Towson, Mount St. Mary's, Tampa and Savannah State to round out the top 10.
