Players from Four Decades Took to the Court

Basketball Flash
ORANGEBURG, SC – Whitney Wiley (2009-11), who a year ago was the leading scorer on the SC State women's basketball team, had 20 points to lead the Garnet team to a 76-62 victory over the Blue squad Friday in an Alumni game at Dukes Gym as a part of an All-Star Basketball Weekend.

On Saturday, Wiley and the other returning players will be recognized during SC State's doubleheader against MEAC rival North Carolina A&T and treated to a post game reception. Tip off for the women's game is set for 2 p.m. with the men's contest to follow at 4 p.m.

Wiley, who had 14 of her total in the second half, nailed five 3-pointers in the contest, which featured players from four decades with teams made up of male and female players.
John Shivers (1997-01) of nearby Elloree followed Wiley for the Garnet with 11 points.
Miguel Burns (1992-95), a successful high school coach, led the Blue team with 12 points. He was followed by Thurman Zimmerman (2002-05), a former Bulldog All-American and MEAC Player of the Year, with nine points.

The contest featured some of SC State's great players including three-time All-American Roberta Williams, who led the Lady Bulldogs to the 1979 AIAW Division II National Championship, who played for the Garnet. A Charleston native, Williams is the only basketball player in school history whose jersey is retired.

Also on the court were Eric Jeter and Rodney Mack, two All-MEAC performers who led the SC State men to the San Juan Shootout against a field that included No. 11-ranked Villanova and the Bulldogs' first berth in the NCAA tournament in 1989, both of whom played for the Blue.

“It was as fun evening,” said Williams.
