SC State Golfers Defeat Benedict 322-437 in Dual Match

The Match was the First Spring Competition for the Lady Bulldogs

ORANGEBURG, SC – The South Carolina State golf team carded an 18-hole team total of 322 Wednesday (Feb. 22) to defeat Benedict, which had a 437, in a dual match at Oak Hills Golf Course in Columbia. The match was the first spring competition for Coach Sandy Burris' team.

The Lady Bulldogs were led by junior Cabriel Duren and freshman Cherie Chua, who both carded 8-over par 80s to tie for medalist honors. They were followed by sophomore Tiana Jones and freshman Cheryl Chua – the twin sister of Cherie Chua, both with scores of 81. Also competing for SC State was graduate student Carmen Jones, who carded an 87.

Burris, despite the high scores by her team, saw some positives after the match.
“Our scores were a little high, but it was not a bad start to the spring schedule,” Burris said. “We have had almost a three-month layoff so we will have to play our way back into the form we had in the fall.

“We are giving a lot of attention to our strength and conditioning because being solid in our conditioning will help us achieve the success we are looking for. We have five matches left and I am expecting us to be very competitive in each of them.”

The Lady Bulldogs renew their schedule Feb. 28 at the two-day, 17-team Gary Freeman Bethune-Cookman (B-CU) Spring Invitational at the LPGA International Golf Course in Daytona Beach.
