-The South Carolina State Bulldogs (4-7) fell short of knocking off a nationally ranked team this season, as #15 Pitt (10-1) knocked off SC State 69-55 Saturday in non-conference play at Peterson Events Center.
“We played a good game against a great Pitt team but in the end we couldn't quite pull it off. I have to give them (Pitt) credit whenever we made mistakes they took full advantage of it and it made the difference,” said SC State head coach Tim Carter.
Senior guard Brandon Riley finished with a game-high 21 points to lead the Bulldogs, while junior point guard Khalif Toombs chipped in 16 in the loss. Red-shirt sophomore Shaquil Barber added 12 points and five rebounds off the bench.
The Panthers jumped out to a quick 18-15 lead off a dunk by J.J. Moore at the 10:01 mark in the first half. Riley nailed a 3-pointer to put the Bulldogs ahead 20-18 with 6:04 left in the half. Talib Zanna's layup sparked a 7-0 run for Pitt to extend the lead to 27-20.
Riley hit a driving layup and Barber tossed in a pair of key free throws to cut the lead to three, 29-26 with 0:28 seconds left in the half. Freshman center Malcolm Gilbert made the highlight of the night throwing down a monster dunk off a missed 3-pointer by Lamar Patterson as time expired to give Pitt a 31-26 lead halftime.
The Panthers out-rebounded the Bulldogs 21-11 in the first half.
SC State jumped out quick with senior forward Omar Sanders hitting six straight unanswered points and Riley hit a key jumper at the 17:21 mark to the lead to one, 35-34. Sophomore guard/forward Lamar Patterson hit a driving layup, along with nailing a huge 3-pointer to give Pitt a 12-point lead, 55-43 with 6:21 left in the game.
Barber's 3-pointer with 1:45 cut the lead to 68-55 but it was not enough as SC State dropped its fifth straight game 69-55 to the University of Pittsburgh. The Bulldogs fall to 4-7 on the season, while the Panthers improve to 10-1 overall.
Sophomore guard Lamar Patterson led Pitt with a team-high 16 points and six rebounds, while senior Ashton Gibbs added 14 in the victory. Sophomore center Talib Zanna recorded the games only double double with 12 points and 14 rebounds on the night.
The Panthers dominated inside play finishing the night with 41 rebounds to the Bulldogs 29.
Carter stated, “A team like Pitt that's big and physical you have to rebound well against them if you are going to have any chance to win.”
SC State will return to action on Wednesday Nov. 21 when they take on the Oklahoma Sooners in a non-conference matchup in Norman, OK. Tipoff is 8 p.m.
