Gardner-Webb Avenges Early Season Loss To SC State 87-57

Box Score BOILING SPRINGS, NC—The South Carolina State Bulldogs dropped their fourth straight contest Saturday after falling to Gardner-Webb 87-57 at Paul Porter Arena.
         South Carolina State falls to 4-6 on the season while Gardner-Webb improves to 6-6 overall. The Bulldogs was led by senior forward Joe Ikhinmwin with 14 points, while junior point guard Khalif Toombs added 13 in the loss.
         The Running Bulldogs jumped out to a quick 23-9 lead off a dunk by Donta Harper at the 11:37 mark in the half.  Senior forward Omar Sanders hit a driving layup to pull SC State within six, 23-17 with 6:16 left in the half.
Gardner-Webb sparked an 11-2 run when Max Landis nailed a jumper with 2:12 left to pull ahead 15, 34-19. The Running Bulldogs took a 36-21 lead into halftime.
         The second-half proved to be the deciding factor in the contest with Gardner-Webb extended the margin to 26, 67-41 on a layup by Santoine Bulter with 7:54 left in the contest. Senior guard David Brown who played his first game of the season after returning from a hand injury sealed the deal hitting three straight 3-pointers to give Gardner-Webb its biggest lead of the night 32, 87-55 with 0:31 seconds left in regulation.
        Gardner-Webb had four players in double-figures with Jason Dawson leading the way with 15 points, Stephon Johnson was second with 13 points and 8 rebounds, while Donta Harper added 12 and Kevin Hartley scored 10 in the victory.
        SC State was outrebounded 42-29 in the game, while only managing 37.7% from the field hitting 20-of-53.
         SC State will return to action on next week when they travel to Pittsburgh, PA, Dec.16 to take on nationally-ranked University of Pittsburgh in a non-conference matchup. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m.
