Wilmington, NC--The SC State women's volleyball team fell to UNC-Greensboro, 0-3, (15-25, 16-25, 17-25), in its opening game of the UNC-W Courtyard by Marriott Tournament. The tournament, which concludes on Saturday, is being contested at Hanover Hall on the campus of UNC-Wilmington.
SC State (1-4), began the first set aggressive, exchanging point-for-point with UNC-Greensboro (UNC-G), through the first eight points. UNC-G (6-0) then to pull ahead 7-4 and never looked back. The Lady Bulldogs managed to stay within three points of the Spartans but could never take the lead. UNC-G would go up by as many as seven (11-18) in the set and go on to take Set One, 15-25.
SC State began Set Two in a 4-0 whole but did not hang their heads. The Lady Bulldogs put together a 4-1 run, to pull within one, 4-5, but then its offense went stagnant. The Spartans went on an 8-4 run, to jump ahead, 8-13. UNC-G would go up by as many as nine points (10-19) before going on to win Set Two, 25-16.
Set Three began much like Set One with the teams exchanging point-for-point through the first 11 points. UNC-G took control of the game at the 12th point as they took a 5-7 lead and never relinquished it. The Spartans increased their advantage to 8-13 en route to its 17-25 Set Three victory.
Junior Peri Ligons (Austin, TX, Connally HS), sophomore E. Paige Webb (Plano, TX, Plano Senior HS) and freshman Desire Waller (Houston, TX, Alief Taylor HS) each record six kills in the match for SC State. Junior Bria Brimmer (Austin, TX, Connally HS) put up 23 set assists and a game-high nine digs for the Lady Bulldogs in the loss.
Olivia Humphries and Ariel Newman led the offensive attack for UNC-G with eight kills each. Newman also led the team defensively with eight digs.
SC State will close out tournament play Saturday, Sept. 4, when they face host UNC-Wilmington at 10:15 a.m. and UCF at 5:00 p.m. Live Stats will be available for both games at the following link:
