Lady Bulldog Golf Team

PORT ST. LUCIE, FL – The South Carolina State  women's golf team will be one of seven college squads competing for the title at the three-day (May 7-9) 24th PGA Minority Collegiate Golf Championship beginning Friday at the PGA Golf Club in Port St. Lucie, Florida.

Over 200 contestants from 49 colleges and universities will compete in the 54-hole event, which will also crown men's champions in Division I, Division II and NAIA, as well as in the women's Division I competition the Lady Bulldogs are entered in. There is also an Independent Division for both men and women.

The SC State women, under second-year head coach Sandra Burris, will be joined in the field by Alabama State, Bethune-Cookman, a six-time winner of the event, Hampton, Lincoln, Tennessee State and Texas Pan-American, the defending champion and a three-time winner.

Making up the SC State team are senior Geneva Mackey of Tucson, AZ; Honesty Biggers, a junior or Orlando; and freshmen Allison Brown of Fayetteville, GA, Cabriel Duren of Oviedo, FL, and Marina Terry of Gastonia, NC, who is back after sustaining a knee injury in November. Senior Addi McLaren of Ontario, Canada is also a member of this year's team but is not competing in the event as she is receiving her degree during Commencement Friday evening in Orangeburg,

“We are very excited to be traveling to the PGA Village and participating in this event,” said Burris. “It's a great experience for our girls. With the many strides we have made this season, I feel pretty good about our chances.

“Honesty (Biggers, the medalist at the recent Women in Golf Championship) has been very consistent,” she continued, “And we are happy to have Marina back after missing most of the season with an ACL tear in November.”

The 54-hole stroke play women's competition will be played on the PGA Golf Club's Ryder Course. Tee time is 7:30 a.m. daily. A practice round is set for Thursday.
