Greensboro, NC—The SC State men's and women's outdoor track and field teams improved immensely as they finished 4th and 3rd at the 2010 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Outdoor Track & Field Championships. The championships were contested at the Irwin Belk Track on the campus of North Carolina A&T State University. Sophomore Shamire Rothmiller finished the meet with 22 points to capture the Outstanding Field Athlete award.
The men's team came on strong during the final day of the competition. Sophomore Leighton Brown led the Bulldogs in the field, finishing second in the javelin with a throw of 48.65. Sophomores Marcus Stephens and Noel Facey also medaled in the field on day three finishing third in the triple jump and shot put respectively. Stephens finished with a jump of 14.47 meters while Facey finished with a distance of 15.77 meters. On the track, senior Aubrey Lemon and Marvin Williams captured the bronze medal in the 100 meter and 400 meter respectively. Lemon clocked a time of 10.53 while Williams came finished with a time of 52.65. The men's 4x100 meter relay finished just shy of medal contention as they placed fourth in a time of 40.69. Overall, the Bulldog men finished the meet with 84 points. The fourth place overall finish is a six place jump from last years 10th place finish.
The Lady Bulldog team came on equally as strong on the final day of competition. Senior Jasmine Smith defended her triple jump title capturing the gold with a distance of 12.5 meters. On the track, freshman Arnetra Frazier finished second in the 100 meter dash with a time of 11.60 while Monique Gracia and Alex Jones finished third in the 100 meter hurdles and 400 meter dash respectively. Gracia finished with a time of 13.69 while Jones clocked a 55.28. The women's 4x100 meter relay team consisting of Nicole Mobley, Arnetra Frazier, Alexandria Jones, and Erica Peake held off eventual repeat champions Hampton to capture the relay title in a time of 45.50. The women's team had its best showing of the Price era, as they finished third overall which was a four place jump from last season when the team finished seventh.
“This was a great meet for both teams,” says third year head coach Tyree E. Price. “The men's team really stepped up and surprised a lot of people.” Price continued, “We knew the women had a good chance to finish in the top of the conference, so their third finish really wasn't a surprise.” “
Outside of the vast improvement by both teams, several individuals were named to the MEAC All-Conference Teams as well as hitting personal best performances in their respective events. Athletes setting personal bests include Marvin Williams (400 hurdles); Levar Knight (long jump) and Zachery Hasty (long jump) on the men side and Alexandria Jones (400 and 200); Arnetra Franklin (100) and Monique Gracia (100 meter dash and 400 hurdles) on the women side.
“I'm extra proud of Alexandria Jones and Marvin Williams for their accomplishments on the track this weekend,” said Price. “Alex sat out last season and had to work back into competition shape over this year, so coming away with two personal best really attests to her abilities. Marvin chose not to participate in his graduation for the opportunity to run these championships and he came away not only with a medal but a personal best time. For him, his decision really paid off.”
Both teams will compete in the Georgia Tech meet this weekend, May 14-15.
