Lady Bulldogs Tennis Team Clinch Division Title; Earns Top-Seed In Tourney

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va., The five-time reigning MEAC champion South Carolina State Lady Bulldogs captured their sixth straight southern division title announced by the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Thursday.

 

            The league also announced the seedings for the 2010 MEAC Men's and Women's Tennis Championships, to be held April 16-18, at the Millbrook Tennis Center in Raleigh, North CarolinaSouth Carolina State swept its divisional counterparts to clinch the number one seed. They concluded the regular season with a 4-0 record in conference play and is 11-4 overall.

 

         Howard finished atop the northern divisional standings to earn the top seed and divisional title. The Lady Bison tallied a perfect 5-0 conference mark and 12-3 record en route to their first MEAC divisional title.

 

       On the men's side, the Florida A&M Rattlers captured the divisional title and top seed in the south with an unblemished 3-0 conference mark. South Carolina State finished second with a 2-1 league record. The Rattlers, winners of seven MEAC men's titles, will vie for their first championship title since 2000. Hampton concluded conference play with a 5-0 record en route to their second straight northern divisional title. The Pirates (10-5) were 6-1 in their last seven matches and 4-0 against MEAC opponents.

 

       Only the top four teams in each division are eligible to compete for the conference title. Coppin State and Maryland Eastern Shore men's and women's teams along with Norfolk State's women's team have been eliminated from tournament play based on their conference finish.

 

         The MEAC Tennis Championships begin on Friday, April 16 at 8:30 a.m. Tennis action continues on Saturday with semifinal play beginning 8:30 a.m. for the women and noon for the men. The championships will conclude on Sunday, April 18 beginning at 9 a.m. with the women's championship final. The men's championship final will follow at 11:30 a.m. The event is free and open to the public.
