SC State Cruises To 91-65 Victory Over FAMU

—Senior guard/forward Jason Flagler poured in a game-high 26 points, while junior Darnell Porter chipped in 22 points along with six 3-pointers as South Carolina State cruised to victory 91-65 over Florida A&M Monday at Smith –Middleton-Memorial Center.

South Carolina State improves to 16-12 overall, 10-6 in the MEAC, while Florida A&M falls to 8-21 overall, 4-11 in the league.

“I was very proud of the way we handle the ball tonight,” said SC State head coach Tim Carter. “We played smart basketball and executed the way we suppose to and it paid off for us.”

A layup by senior Jason Flagler gave the Bulldogs their first lead of the night 29-28 at the 6:56 mark.  Senior Brandon Smalls nailed a 3-pointer to put SC State ahead eight, 43-35 with 2:16 left in the first-half.

South Carolina State closed out the first-half with a 45-40 lead.

Junior Darnell Porter open the second-half nailing four 3-pointers sparking a 19-3 lead to give the Bulldogs a 23 point lead, 66-43 at the 16:46 mark. Porter back-to-back 3-pointers with 5:20 left in the game put SC State ahead 28, 82-54.

Freshman point guard Tyvon William's layup gave the Bulldogs their biggest lead of the night 30 with 3:30 left. South Carolina State went on to an impressive 91-65 victory over Florida A&M in MEAC action.

“We really shot the ball well tonight against their zone,” stated Carter. “Darnell it the type of shooter once he's in a zone it's hard to stop him. I was glad he good shooting night for our team and in front of our fans.”

Also leading the way for South Carolina State was senior Brandon Smalls with 14 points and six rebounds, while junior Rio Pitt lead grabbed a game-high eight rebounds and freshman guard Khalif Toombs posted nine assists in the victory.

FAMU was led by David Buchannon with 11 points, while Yannick Crowder and Amin Stevens each chipped in 10 each in the loss.

South Carolina State will return to action Thursday in the final regular season home game against Winston-Salem State.  Tip-off for the women's game is 5:30 p.m.; followed by the men at 7:30 p.m. SC State will be celebrating “Senior Night”.
