Landover, MD—The SC State women's track team is in fifth place and the men's team sits in ninth after day one (six events) of the 2010 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Indoor Track Championships in Landover, MD. The championships, which are being held at the Prince Georges County Sports and Learning Complex, conclude tomorrow.
The women had a very good showing throughout the first six events. Freshman Tamala Daley (Stone Mountain, GA/Redan HS) was the top finisher of the day for the Lady Bulldogs as she picked up ten points after winning the long jump with a distance of 5.91 meters (19-04.74). Sophomore Shamire Rothmiller was the only other individual to score on day one as she picked up five points for her fourth place finish in the shot put with a throw of 14.48 meters (47-06.25). Shantrell Jenkins qualified in the 60 meter dash while Monique Gracia in the 60 meter hurdles.
Despite not having many points posted, the men's team is still in the thick of things. With the finals of the shot put, high jump, and triple jump remaining, the men's team can still finish in the middle of the pack. On the day the men's team received points from sophomores Noel Facey, Rashad DeMesme and Marcus Stephens. Facey earned four points in the weight throw with a distance of 12.45 meters (40-10.25) which was good enough for fifth place. While DeMesme and Stephens scored one point in the long jump and the weight throw respectively. DeMesme throw 10.28 meters (33-08.75) while Stephens jumped 6.89 meters (22-07.25). Sophomore Chris Ward qualified for the finals in the 200. Senior Mark Elmore and freshman Christopher Lovett are currently sitting in six and eight place respectively in the men's heptathlon. Elmore has recorded 2,334 points while Lovett has pulled in 2,090 points with four completed events.
“Both teams are pretty much where I expected them to be after day one,” said head coach Tyree E. Price. “If we continue to stay focused on day two we have a good chance of finishing higher in the standings.”
The final day of competition starts tomorrow at 9 a.m. with the women's pole vault and women's pentathlon events. Early afternoon field events include the conclusion of the men's heptathlon, the men's shot put, men's high jump and men and women's triple jump.
