Orangeburg, SC- After an excellent showing in its third meet of the 2009-10 indoor season, the SC State men's and women's indoor track and field teams will head to Chapel Hill, NC to participate in the Dick Taylor Carolina Classic. The meet, which is scheduled for Friday-Saturday, Jan. 29-30, will be hosted by the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill at the Dick Taylor Track -Eddie Smith Field House on the campus of UNC-Chapel Hill.
The meet gets underway on Friday morning at 11 a.m. with women's pentathlon and will feature teams from several NCAA Division I conferences as well as a couple of Division I independents.
Third-year head coach Tyree E. Price is very optimistic about how well his teams will do this week. “We are going up against some of the best athletes out there and I'm very confident that we will run, jump and throw with the best of them,” says Price. “I was very pleased with our showing last week and expect the team to equal or do better this week.”
At the Niswonger Invitational (East Tennessee State University) last weekend, (January 22-23), both Bulldog programs posted times and distances that were good enough to land them in the school record books. On the women side in the running events

Her second place 200 meter time of 24.69 placed her fourth in the school all-time record book while her 60 meter time of 7.63 in the preliminary round ties her for third with Falawna Ingram in the record book, (she recorded 7.73 in the finals). Also finding themselves in the record book was
Arnetra Frazier who won the 60 meters in the university/collegiate division with a time of 7.64 (5
th in the record book);
Shantrell Jenkins who placed 2
nd in the 60 meters invitational with a time of 7.47 (1
st in the record book); and
Nicole Mobley who placed 4
th in the 60 meters invitational with a time of 7.65 (7.61 preliminary time puts her 2
nd in the record book).
The women had equal success in the field events as
Jasmine Smith placed 1st in the triple jump with a record setting jump of 12.37 meters (40-07.00: 3rd in the record books) while
Tamala Daley took 3
rd in the long-jump with personal best leap of 5.91 meters (19-04.75: 3
rd in the record book). Also fairing well for the Bulldog women were
Monique Gracia who finished first in the 60 meter hurdles university/collegiate division with a time of 8.63 and the women's 4x4 relay team consisting of
Andranette Moss,
Alexandria Jones,
Amber Williams and
Erica Peake, who finished third with a time of 3:53.00
Christopher Ward continued to be the most consistent Bulldog competitor on the men's side. Ward recorded the second best school time in the 200 meters at 21.85 (2
nd place finish). Senior Levar Knight jumped a distance of 6.96 meters (22-10.00) in the long jump while Leighton Brown and Aubrey Lemon ran 8.60 and 7.01 in the 60 meter hurdles and 60 meters respectively.
The Bulldog Track & Field Teams is expected to add to its qualifying list for the upcoming Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Indoor Track & Field Championships which will be held Thursday-Saturday, February 11-13, 2010 in Landover, MD. To date the teams has combined to qualify 19 athletes for the championships. (See complete list below).
