SC STATE MEN SUCCUMB TO HORNETS 67-58

Sc State Falls To 1-1 IN MEAC

DOVER, DE – Host Delaware State made six of is seven 3-point baskets in the second half and outscored South Carolina State 46-28 in the period to grab a 67-58 victory over the Bulldogs Monday at Memorial Hall.

Coach Tim Carter's Bulldogs led 30-21 at the break and went up by as many as 10 points early in the second half before Chad Wilson, who led all scorers with 19 points and Brandon Baylor, who had all 11 of his points in the final 20 minutes, led a Hornet charge that turned a 34-24 deficit with 15 minutes left into a 38-36 edge with 13:40 on the clock. Each hit two 3-pointers during the decisive run.

SC State came back to tie the contest on a short jumper  by senior Jason Flagler, who led the Bulldogs with 14 points, however, Delaware State, which claimed 19 offensive rebounds, took advantage of a number of second chance opportunities to move ahead 50-42 with 7:44 remaining.

Another jumper by Flagler and a 3-pointer by Darnell Porter, who finished with 10 points for SC State, pulled the Bulldogs to within three, 50-47 at the 6:41 mark, but the Hornets scored nine of the next 13 points to move ahead 62-51 in the final two minutes and went on to their second consecutive win.

Carter's team dropped to 7-6 on the season and fell to 1-1 in the MEAC.

“We just didn't compete in the second half,” Carter said after the loss. “We completely lost our composure with about 10 minutes to play. They especially outplayed us on the glass. It's hard to win when you give up 19 offensive boards.

“We were worried about Neal (Marcus Neal, the Hornets top scorer) but two guys (Wilson and Baylor) hit some big shots from the perimeter. That was big for Del State but we were simply outworked in the second half.”

Delaware State improved to 6-7 overall and 1-1 in the MEAC.

The  Bulldogs return to action Saturday when they face Morgan State in a 7 p.m. home contest that will be carried live by ESPN2.
