SC State to Host AMIkids Experiential Challenge Summer Games

AMIKids to Visit SC State

ORANGEBURG, SC – South Carolina State will play host to the four-day AMIKids Experiential Challenge Summer Games, beginning Monday (Jun. 1), on the campus. The event affords youths from seven states, including South Carolina, to participate in motivational activities that are challenging, both physically and academically, and includes sports and various academic contests.

Thirty teams of 10-12 kids from the Palmetto State, Florida, Georgia, Virginia, Texas, Pennsylvania, Louisiana and Illinois will begin arriving on the SC State campus Monday afternoon. An opening ceremony and pep rally is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Dawson Bulldog Stadium.

Tuesday's schedule will feature track competition, followed by swimming and volleyball events Wednesday, and volleyball and a closing ceremony Thursday. Academic competition will take place daily.

AMIKids, headquartered in Tampa, Fla., has been serving inner city youths and their families since 1969.

Heyward Golden, an all-conference defensive back for the Bulldogs (1980-83) and a 10th round draftee by the New York Giants in 1984, is Vice President of Operations for the group, and Zach Thomas, a standout receiver for the Bulldogs (1977-81) who went on to a NFL career with Denver and Tampa Bay, is Executive Director.

Several other former SC State athletes and coaches will be among the counselors and judges volunteering at the event.
