GREENSBORO, NC – South Carolina State freshman Shamire Rothmiller won the women’s shot put with a record toss of 14.97m (49-01.50 ft.), while fellow freshmen Noel Facey captured the men’s discus with a throw of 45.93m (150-08 ft.) at the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Track and Field Championship Friday at the Irwin Belk Track on the North Carolina A&T campus.
Rothmiller’s mark qualified her for the NCAA Track and Field Regional to be contested at the same facility, beginning May 29. Facey also earned a trip to the Regional by virtue of his victory.
Overall, the SC State women amassed 18 points for fifth place after four events scored in the championship which concludes Saturday. The men were tied for sixth place after five events with 14 points.
Leading the women’s competition was Norfolk State with 29 points, following by defending champion Hampton and Maryland-Eastern Shore with 22 points each.
The Norfolk State men, going for their fourth straight title, were way ahead in the men’s competition with 51.5 points, followed by Morgan State and host North Carolina A&T with 20 and 19 points, respectively.
Also earning points for the SC State women Friday were Brittney Stewart, who finished third in the 5000 meters in a time of 18:29.70, and Rene McWilliams, seventh in the long jump with a leap of 5.53m (18-01.75 ft.).
Also scoring in the men’s division was Levar Knight, seventh in the long jump with a leap of 7.07m (23-02.50 ft), and Leighton Brown, seventh in the Decathlon with 5603 points
Earning spots in Saturday’s finals for SC State were Donta Young in the 110-meter hurdles with a NCAA Regional qualifying mark of 14.22; Young and Marvin Williams in the 400-meter hurdles, and McWilliams in the women’s 100 meters.
