STONE MOUNTAIN, GA – South Carolina State carded a 36-hole total (383-373) 756 to finish second in the 15th annual Women's Collegiate Golf Classic played at the Stone Mountain Golf Club Saturday and Sunday.
Coach Herman Belton's team had a second-round total of 373, shaving ten strokes off its opening-round score, however, the Lady Bulldogs finished well back of Hampton, which carded a two-day total of (331-347) 678 to earn their first title in the event.
Trailing Hampton and SC State in the field were Alabama State at (394-384) 778, Southern with a (478-477) 955, and Benedict at (518-486).
The second-place finish was the best showing for SC State in the event, after two straight thirds.
“We improved from third last year to second this year,” said Belton. “I thought we had a chance to win this year, but the course was extremely tough.
“I'd like to compliment Hampton,” he continued, “but I'm very proud of the effort given by our young ladies in hanging on for second place.”
Junior Addi McLaren had a 15-over par 86 on Sunday, nine strokes better than her opening-round 95 for a 36-hole total 181 to lead SC State. She was followed by Honesty Biggers with a (90-93) 183, Geneva Mackey at (96-90) 186, and Danielle Williams at (102-104) 206. Also competing for the Lady Bulldogs was transfer Shalisa Blocker, who had a (142-141) a 283.
Hampton's Iman Ellis carded a two-day total (80-79) 159 to earn medalist honors.
