ORANGEBURG, SC – Two members of South Carolina State’s 2009 men’s basketball team have been named to the inaugural BoxtoRow.com/BASN Black College Division I All-America Basketball team announced Tuesday (Apr. 21).

            Bulldog senior Jason Johnson earned first-team honors and was also named Defensive Player of the Year. Junior Jason Flagler was an honorable mention choice to the team.

The 6-7 Johnson, a Bronx, N.Y. native, earlier received identical honors from the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference. He led the MEAC in rebounds with 8.2 per game and also averaged 13.8 points.

 He was joined on the BoxtoRow.com/BASN first team by Coppin State senior guard Tywain McKee, who was chosen as Player of the Year, junior forward Grant Maxey of Jackson State, Prairie View junior forward Darnell Hugee, senior guard Michael Deloach of Norfolk State and freshman guard Jamar Briscoe of North Carolina Central, who tied for the fifth spot on the team.

Morgan State junior Reggie Holmes led the second team, which also included Brandon Brooks of Alabama State, Jeremy Caldwell of Jackson State, Neal Pitt of Maryland-Eastern Shore and Corey Lyons of Norfolk State.

Others receiving honorable mention accolades along with Flagler, who was second in both scoring (12.8 ppg) and rebounding (6.2 rpg) for SC State, were Darrion Griffin of Jackson State, Southern’s Chris Davis, Chief Kickstallionsims of Alabama State, and Marquise Kately of Morgan State.

Morgan’s Todd Bozeman was named Coach of the Year by the group.

WINSTON-SALEM, NC – The Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference tournament tips off Tuesday at the Lawrence Joel Veteran Memorial Coliseum with the 10th seeded South Carolina State women (6-22, 3-13 MEAC) taking on 7th seeded  Florida A&M (12-16, 7-9 MEAC) in the opening game at 11 a.m. The winner will advance to Wednesday’s 10 a.m. quarterfinals against number two-seeded Coppin State.
